Benefits of Swimming in Winter
The benefits of swimming in winter outweigh the risk of kids stopping swimming lessons for months at a time.
The thought of getting in the pool on a cold winter’s day is enough to make anyone shudder but the following are a few reasons to persevere!
1. The resistance to cold and winter illnesses is increased in those that swim in colder weather. In general, children who attend regular swimming lessons tend to be fitter, therefore maintaining stronger immune systems.
2. Boost metabolism – whilst this is not such a concern for our children, it has to be better than being couch potatoes all season!
3. Drowning occurs in all seasons. Keep your children familiar with pools and water safety so they are not having to re-learn their skills once the warmer months roll around again. Children learn through repetition so there will be an impact on their progress if they stop through Winter. This is particularly true in children who are under 7 years of age, as their long term skill retention and muscle memory are just starting to develop.
4. You will find there are more lesson times available and often smaller class sizes if your child continues to swim through Winter whilst their fellow swimmers are at home watching PJ Mask in their tracky dacks!
If you are swimming through winter please ensure you dry off and dress in warm, weather appropriate clothing before leaving the swimming facility. A tip provided by an Acupuncturist friend is to keep your head (your child’s head) and neck warm before being exposed to the weather elements outdoors as 30% of your body heat is lost through your head! ♥♥♥
