Dangers of water environments around the home

As the recent rain subsides and our children excitedly return to outdoor play, it is important to consider the dangers of water around the home.  Pools and spas are conspicuous dangers, however any buckets, bathtubs, eskies, fountains, ponds, drains, inflatable/clam shell pools, pet bowls, sandpits and any areas that can be accessed by children and can accumulate water.  These areas, whilst often over-looked pose a threat to children, especially smaller children.

A child could fall into or be playing in one of these environments and not realise the dangers.  Children can drown in as little as 5 cm of water.  Below are some tips to reduce the dangers of water around your home.

Close toilet lids.

  1. Keep bathroom and laundry doors closed.

  2. Empty water from mop buckets and other containers.

  3. Store outdoor clam shell pools, toys, buckets and nappy bins, etc. that can be filled with water upside down to prevent them filling with rainwater.

  4. Drain the bathtub after use.

  5. Empty eskies after use – remember that ice will turn to water.

  6. Be aware of leaving pet water bowls around the house. Supervise children around the bowls, place the bowls at a height or in an area out of reach to children.  Not only is this a drowning hazard but a choking hazard if little one’s taste buds are tempted by pet food!
